WHY OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CSO-SUN ALLIANCE

One of the key component SC programmes is the Health Department which focuses on Newborn and Child Health, maternal health and nutrition. The country’s infant and child mortality rates remain amongst the highest in the world. The under five mortality rate for Zambia stands at 137.6 deaths for every 1000 live births while the infant mortality rate at 76.6 deaths for every 1000 live births (MDG Report 2013). Although Child mortality has declined by almost 30% in the past two decades, 1 in 8 children die before they turn 5 years. It is also estimated that 36,655 children in Zambia will die from preventable causes between now and the end of 2015 unless concerted, focused action is taken now to achieve MDG 4 by 2015[1]

In order to raise awareness and accelerate progress towards reducing under five and infant mortality SC launched the ‘EveryOne’ Campaign in 2009. The overall goal for the campaign is by 2015 contributed to Zambia meeting the MDG4 (reduce the under-five mortality rate by two thirds) and MDG5 (reduce the maternal mortality ratio by three quarters and achieve universal access to reproductive health services.

Save the Children has been working with the CSO-SUN from inception of the organization and we are very happy to be part of these great awards that the CSO-SUN has initiated. We also work in partnership with various Government Ministries, Departments and institutions  in efforts aimed at promoting respect and protection of children’s rights.  Among the key ministries that we have been working with are Ministry of Gender and Child Development, Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child Health, Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Home Affairs, the Human Rights Commission, Parliament and the Zambia Law Development Commission. We also partner with other NGOs and and like-minded organizations in ensuring that children’s rights are prioritized.

Save the Children is a child rights organization with a dual mandate that seeks to inspire breakthroughs in the way the world treats children.  We envision a Zambia in which every child attains the right to survival, protection, development and participation.
